Did you know that Canada is the second-largest country on earth? Its land mass spans about forty percent of North America. Much of this land is rugged wilderness perfect for outdoor adventure. It's no wonder one of our favorite motorized toys, the snowmobile, was invented in Canada!
That's where today's spotlight, the Great Canadian Snowmobile Trail, comes in. North America's first coast-to-coast recreational trail is an awesome place for endless adventures with a snowmobile and your aluminum ALCOM sled hauler. The Great Canadian Snowmobile Trail boasts over 18,000 km (11,185 miles) of trails. That's a serious amount of sled time!
The GCST was created in addition to the Trans Canada Trail, or Great Trail, system, a multi-use trail that connects each Canadian Province, stretching over 24,000 km (14,913 miles). On the Trans Canada Trail, outdoor enthusiasts can hike, bike, cross-country ski, ride horses, paddle canoes or kayaks, and -- a favorite for our ALCOM family -- ride ATVs and snowmobiles. But not all sections of the Trans Canada Trail are ideal for snowmobiling, and snowmobile organizations decided to take action to create a sled-friendly route across Canada. Enter the Great Canadian Snowmobile Trail!
The network was established in 1998 through the cooperation of twelve territorial/provincial snowmobile associations across Canada. It is maintained by a dedicated, widespread, coordinated volunteer effort across the provinces, including local and provincial clubs.
Trails in the GCST cover all types of terrain, stretching from the craggy Atlantic coast in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, then skirting the Great Lakes along the USA/Canada border and across the western provinces, extending deep into the Yukon territory in the Northwest.
Even today, local snowmobile clubs continue efforts to expand the trail and create additional connections between sections of the trail, enabling more Canadians – and visitors – to access the thrill of snowmobiling during long winter months.
Choose a trail close to home, or take a trip up north to explore new terrain! Along the Great Canadian Snowmobile Trail, there's no shortage of opportunities to explore new places. The best news? Eighty percent of Canadians live within 30 minutes of access to the trail. This means endless high-adrenaline snowmobile adventure is open to just about anyone with a sled and a trailer.
Explore boreal forests, rocky coastlines, and Great Lakes snowbelts. Wind along rivers, cross open plains, and climb steep chutes. You could even join the Trek Across the Top, a snowmobile trek from Tok, Alaska to Dawson, Yukon -- known in Dawson as "the most fun you can have with your snowpants on!"
Wherever you decide to visit, Canada is an outdoor explorer's dream. In fact, you might want to plan for more than one Canadian snowmobile vacation! Once you've narrowed down your destination, find locals' trail reviews, photos, and recommendations at Wikiloc.
Remember to check local laws and requirements, no matter where you travel, so you can ride safely and legally. Then load the aluminum trailer, grab your gear, and hit the road!

Trust an aluminum hauler for a lighter tow that makes rust a worry of the past.
Choose an enclosed snowmobile trailer to get your sleds to the trailside and you can also opt for upgrades like cabinets, lighting packages, a heater, and more creature comforts. Power up and keep your accessories charged with power packages, and organize gear with coat hooks or a wardrobe package. Some folks even choose upgrades, or DIY add-ons, to convert a trailer into a camper.

For a lighter ride, look for an open snow trailer. The ultimate in low-profile, parking spot-friendly sled hauling, opt for a sport deck. Bring a friend and up to two sleds and you're good to go. Or, opt for a tilting trailer for up to two sleds. It's so light many SUVs can tow it!
