Off-Roading in California With ALCOM Trailers

UTV on a mountain trail in California

In the northern parts of the United States, spring has arrived, and four-wheeling season might already be getting started. In other parts of the country, off-roading season never ends, thanks to warmer climates.

The state of California is so large it experiences year-round ATV access in the south, and world-class snowmobiling during winter in some northern parts of the state! We've explored side-by-side and ATV destinations in New England and other parts of the country. Now, ALCOM's lineup of lightweight ATV and UTV trailers is headed to California.

Open & Enclosed ATV Trailers

First things first: you need an ATV or side by side, but we figure you already have at least one of those if you're looking for places to go riding in California. Next, you need a trailer to get that UTV from home to wherever you want to roam. So if you don't already have an ATV trailer, check out ALCOM's aluminum off-road trailer buying guide. With options for just about any ATV or UTV on the market, we have enclosed and open aluminum trailers to fit your rig, budget, and tow vehicle capacity. Use a dealer locator to get in touch with your nearest CargoPro, High Country, or Mission Trailers dealer.

For straightforward loading, securing, and hauling without busting the budget or going over weight, check out the 83" and 88" open aluminum ATV trailers. Multiple loading options and tie-down configurations let you bring more than one off-road vehicle on one trailer.

Interested in some portable shelter from the elements? Maybe you're tired of setting up a tent and want to retrofit your aluminum trailer for camping. Or maybe you just need the extra cargo space for the whole family's gear. Enclosed UTV trailers are the answer. Let ALCOM customize it for you, or take on a DIY project for your ultimate off-road trailer.

The Golden State

With your ATVs and side-by-sides tuned up, registered and insured, and your aluminum trailer similarly adventure-ready, you can load up and head out. Whether you're cross country road-tripping or a California resident on staycation, there is so much to see in the third largest state in the USA. With its 840-mile coastline, mountain ranges, deserts (including the hottest place on earth -- Death Valley), and forests covering over 163,000 square miles, California is larger than many countries across the world. We don't recommend trying to see the whole state in one trip, but if you do -- make sure you clear your schedule and allow plenty of time to explore.

Where will you go first? Southern California, where ATV season never ends? Further north, where national forests spread from the coast to the Nevada state line? Brush up on California's OHV laws and get ready for your trip!

Northern California Off Roading

In the northern half of the Golden State, broad swaths of the land are covered by National Forests -- and many of these protected areas allow four-wheeling! (Here's a complete list.) Find camping and off-road ATV riding in Mendocino National Forest, the only one in the state without a paved road entering its borders, or the state's largest national forest, Shasta-Trinity.

Unloading a UTV from an enclosed aluminum off-road trailer

Closer to Yosemite National Park -- where ATVs aren't permitted -- explore Stanislaus or Sierra National Forest on your four-wheeler. If you venture closer to the coast, in the San Francisco Bay area, make a stop at Carnegie SVRA for 1300 acres of off-road terrain. Heading south, you'll find Frank Raines OHV Park and Hollister Hills SVRA. There are nine State Vehicular Recreation Areas altogether in California.

Southern California Off Roading

Heading south from the Bay Area, find  lots more trails to explore. If Death Valley National Park is part of your itinerary, find Dumont Dunes OHV Area south of the park near Baker, CA. In the greater Los Angeles area, check out areas like Cleghorn Ridge OHV, Miller Canyon, Divide Peak, and Jawbone Canyon OHV Area. Visit Stoddard Valley for a chance to go UTV riding in the Mojave Desert!

UTV in the distance at the Imperial Sand Dunes

If you venture far enough south, you can ride at Imperial Sand Dunes. Set up camp nearby and explore this incredible landscape on ATVs or side-by-sides.  About an hour west, on the way to San Diego, you'll find the 85,000-acre Ocotillo Wells SVRA

Trailers For The Long Haul

No matter which part of California you want to visit first, get ready to put some miles under your UTV tires! And no matter which all-aluminum ATV trailer you choose, you'll be ready for years of dependable transport. Plus, if you ever need to move a new washing machine set, a lawn mower, a motorcycle -- you name it -- your open or enclosed ATV trailer comes in handy. With versatile tie-down points available, you can make the most of your investment whether you're chasing adventures on the west coast or bringing brush to the landfill.

Let your local ALCOM dealer help you get ready for your next off-road adventure with an all-aluminum ATV trailer to get off-roading season started right!
